Recognizing the Dynamics of Abuse and Destructive Social Norms

“Boys will be boys”

“Locker room talk”

“You can’t do that, you’re a girl.”

We encounter phrases and expressions like these on a daily basis. In order to prevent violence from happening, it’s important that we understand where it comes from.

Many of us think of physical violence when we hear the term “domestic abuse.” But the term is used to describe the various forms of abuse that can happen in a relationship, which may be verbal, emotional, sexual or economic. It also acknowledges that some forms of abuse may not be illegal.

At Emerge, we talk about the ecological model to understand why people use abusive behaviors and why we, as a society tolerate them. (link out to eco model, maybe?) MISSING LINK!
